Statement

For over 30 years I have attempted to create fabric pieces that lay flat. The beginning was quilting. Over the last 10 years, I aimed for more interest, trading flat for concepts such as contrast, line, shape, texture, solitude, organic, abstract, etc.

I select my fabrics emotionally, I may start with a few fabrics or 20. I feel them, try them with each other; it’s almost a spiritual dance. I can get exhausted when I am pulling fabrics, putting them back, putting them together, rehearsing.

I also get passionate over surface design, whether it be dyeing, painting, silk screen, resist, photo transfer. When in this mode, I try many techniques, keep going until all of my raw materials are exhausted. This is so I have a selection when time to start work.  Usually I do not use something for its intended use— many things are accidents.

When I began this bag I knew the style first. I have had a love affair with insects for a few years and wish to expand (more insects). Thus the lining began first.

The construction of this purse was almost a wrestling match. I hope to be able to make others of this style.
