I was an early walker and at 12 months I was running down the beach at Cape Cod where we vacationed for 10 years. I loved walking that beach and gathering nature's treasures. I remember the day when time stood still as I looked toward the mainland and had my first revelation about walking: If I just kept walking along the shore I could walk all the way to New York, even to Florida. In fact I could walk all around the country! That really appealed to me.

As a kid I hiked with the Girl Scouts and neighborhood friends. We often took our dogs and a peanut butter sandwich and headed to the next town or park and the woods beyond. Five wonderful teen summers were spent at Camp Hanoum in Thetford VT. There I got into serious hiking on the Dartmouth Outing Club and Appalachian Trails. The last hike in August was always a three-day trip to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. On the second day our trail passed under the cog railway track. One year, as we emerged on the other side, we were surprised to see a small group of older hikers coming up the trail along the railroad. Among them was a slim woman with white hair.

Here came my second revelation about walking. I decided right then and there that I was not going to let myself get old and decrepit - I would continue to walk. Now 60 years later, looking much like that woman, I've been fortunate to be able to keep that promise - walking the world at every opportunity.

Walking provides time to smell the roses, listen to the birds, feel the breeze, enjoy the view, meet people and snap that picture which, years later, takes me back to that place and moment.

Several years ago, as I walked high in the Alps above Grindelwald, enjoying the magnificent views, I had my third revelation about walking: Why do we think so much about going to Heaven when there are so many heavens right here on Earth? All we have to do is lace up our boots, walk out and experience it.
