Moving countries (from England to the United States) – and thus moving continents – has been a huge shift in my life.  This led me to think of a much more dramatic move – that of the continents themselves, shifting over the face of the planet.
On investigating shifting tectonic plates, I came across a stylized animation of the motions of the earth’s surface and interior, representing millions of earth years of changes in one minute.

At one section in the video the interior of the earth looks so much like Fallopian tubes, and as the clip moves through the process, it seems as if the earth is giving birth to a new creation.  This led me to reflect on another big shift in my life – that of giving birth and becoming a mother.

The piece is created of fabrics, some hand-dyed by me, which are appliqued, pin-tucked, pleated and otherwise textured to simulate the earth.  On to this are fused images printed on silk organza.
